The Gathering, founded in the Netherlands in 1989, began with a death/doom metal style before evolving into atmospheric rock and experimental music. After their debut Always (1992), the band released Almost A Dance in 1993 on Foundation 2000 Records, produced by Tom Holkenborg (later known as Junkie XL). This album marked a shift away from growls and doom influences toward a progressive rock/metal sound, with clean vocals, intricate guitar arrangements, and expansive soundscapes that laid the foundation for their future evolution. |
