| Description | On November 1st, 1973, Kiss signed a recording deal with Casablanca Records and entered Bell Sound Studios in New York City to begin recording their first album. On December 31st the band had their official industry premiere at the Academy of Music in New York, opening for Blue Öyster Cult. It was at this show that Gene Simmons accidentally set his hair on fire - coated in highly flammable hairspray as it always was - for the first time. Many similar incidents were to follow while he performed his regular fire-breathing routine. Kiss'' first tour started on February 5th, 1974 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, at the Lister Hall Cafeteria in the city''s University. The band''s self-titled debut album was released on February 18th. Casablanca and Kiss promoted the album heavily throughout the spring and summer of 1974. In March they performed ''Nothin to Lose,'' ''Firehouse,'' and ''Black Diamond'' on ABC''s ''In Concert'' program, their first television appearance. On April 29th, the band performed ''Firehouse'' on The Mike Douglas Show. This broadcast included Simmons'' first televised interview, a conversation with Douglas in which Simmons declared himself ''evil incarnate,'' eliciting titters from an uncomfortable and largely confused studio audience. In-between these two TV performances the band played at the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland Ohio, on April 1st ''74, in support of Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher, a show broadcast across the greater Ohio Area by WMMS-FM, as part of their ''Nights Out At The Agora'' series, letting local rock fans who didn''t attend sample a taste of this outrageous new act. This album contains all of the performances mentioned above - the entire Agora show - for the first time ever on CD - and the two television appearances - including the hilarious Mike Douglas interview. Allowing fans to finally get to hear this early incarnation of the band in truly delightful quality, these historic recordings are sure to become a staple of every decent Kiss collection in existence. |
