Description | Diocletian have pummelled their way through the underground since 2004, unleashing their first demo the following year. For those not indoctrinated by their unyielding militant death metal, the compilation titled ''Annihilation Rituals'' will give you a brutal introduction to their relentless intensity and unrivalled aggression. This malevolent entity has gone from strength to strength on reputation alone, breaking free from New Zealand to tour Asia, Australia, Europe and the United States with live performances proving beyond doubt they can bring the power and overwhelming intensity from all of their releases to the live arena. Each release up until the debut album ''Doom Cult'' has long since been out-of-print and difficult to obtain, (in particular the demo recordings on cassette and the ‘Sect of Swords’ 7" EP,) and this compilation documents for the uninitiated masses the primordial beginnings and evolution into a monstrous war machine. Commencing the unrelenting barrage with the first demo (2005), the listener is thrown into a landscape of death and violence, grinding guitars peel flesh from bones, bass distorted and teeth-rattling as savage, pounding drums hammer doom and destruction into the listener''s psyche while inhuman vocals bellow litanies of desolation and destruction - here is the foundation of all that is Diocletian, this is the start of a long campaign of war. ‘Decimator’ (2007) sees Diocletian manoeuver their music into darker territory, combining the primitive aggression of black and death metal with the despair of doom metal adding touches of discordance and angular riffs that verify the long-time influence of genre-defying artists such as Swans and Neurosis. ‘Chaos Rising’ (2008) reiterates the intentions of the music with re-recordings of two demo-era songs and the aptly titled ''Gesundrian'' - or as it is in old English ''To Smite'' - which showcases the band''s integrity and consummate devotion to keep their music in a continual march forward. ‘Sect of Swords’ (2007) at this point in time illustrates the culmination of ideas that is a soundscape to the coming Apocalypse with a re-investment in primitive structures colliding with heavy militant rhythms and ending with a cold and calculated rendition of Blasphemy''s ''Weltering in Blood''. The release of ‘Annihilation Rituals’ heralds both a superior line-up and a return to form for the standard-bearers of militant death metal. The creed of Diocletian is bleak and feral, militant and decaying, there is no false entry, no gimmicks, no pretence or theatrics, the atmosphere is as toxic as it is heavy, the tactics tumultuous and violent and the sonic ordnance of Diocletian since the very beginning has and always will be death metal totality. www.doomcult.net |
