Description | The Tubes first album however was not released until 1975, but when it was, Al Kooper was in the producer''s chair and the result was a stunning example of pre-punk meets Rocky Horror performance-art. The group''s live shows were legendary and the gig included on this CD was one-such occasion when the entire shebang was broadcast live across the airwaves, which assisted greatly in showcasing the band to a wider audience and helping them achieve notoriety almost immediately. Interestingly, while they omitted to play even one track from side one of their debut record, they played side two in its entirety, although the numbers were spread throughout the show, What Do You Want From Life, Boy Crazy, Mondo Bondage and of course, White Punks On Dope were all included in this broadcast, along with cover versions of Captain Beefheart''s Gimme Dat Harp Boy which, bizarrely, segues into The Captain & Tennille''s recent hit Love Will Keep Us Together - surely the only time in history these two compositions have ever been played anywhere in succession! The show also included five numbers from The Tubes'' second album ''Young & Rich'' including the classic sleazy duet Don''t Touch Me There alongside Tubes World Tour, Pimp, Stand Up & Shout and the title track. A superb live performance by a group so often forgotten these days but who were a dynamic live and studio band that can legitimately call themselves precursors of the later punk explosion - indeed no lesser an act than The Clash borrowed lyrics from the legendary White Punks On Dope when naming their own second album ''Give ''Em Enough Rope''. |
