Description | Although only two months had passed since the completion of "Nashville Skyline", April 24, 1969 saw Bob Dylan return to Nashville''s Columbia Music Row Studios for the first of the six sessions to record the double album "Self Portrait". The three sessions that took place in Nashville spanned nine days, but it would be eleven months before Dylan completed the album with a further three sessions recorded over three days in Columbia''s New York studios. Within two months of completing "Self Portrait" Dylan commenced work on his next album, "New Morning". Some of the tracks recorded during the sessions for these two albums would later be released by Columbia on the 1973 "Dylan" album in "revenge" for his leaving the label to join David Geffen''s Asylum Records. The 28 tracks included on this collection are original versions of songs covered by Dylan during these sessions (April 1969 - June 1970) - albeit in many cases not released at the time. Encompassing a rich tapestry of American Roots music with excursions into country, blues, folk, rock & roll, soul and other genres, this was clearly a period when Bob was harking back to his earliest musical inspirations - perhaps why, for many, his cover versions were the best part of his output during this era. |
