Description | Although young Bobby Zimmerman famously inscribed a friend''s high school yearbook with the words "to join Little Richard" when referring to his future plans, there is far more to Bob Dylan''s formative years than rock ''n'' roll. Dylan''s admiration for country music started at a young age and two early handwritten pieces that have surfaced, ''The Drunkard''s Son'' and''Little Buddy'', both transcribed by Dylan by the age of sixteen, confirm this. These two Hank Snow songs may have been in the large collection of 78s owned by Matt Helstrom, the father of Dylan''s 11th-grade sweetheart Echo. Bob spent many hours at the Helstrom''s home listening to Matt''s collection - a selection teeming with Hank Snow, Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers and Bill Monroe. This music was to leave an impression on Bob''s psyche that would return to the fore at various points throughout his long career. The tracks included in this collection are presented roughly chronologically as Dylan performed them from 1960 to 2002. Rubbing shoulders with tracks by the above named artists are a wide range of cuts by the likes of Webb Pierce, Johnny Cash, The Carter Family, Sons Of The Pioneers, The Stanley Brothers and numerous others to make for a delightful two disc set, packaged with illustrated booklet featuring extensive notes by ''Isis'' magazine''s Derek Barker, and with slipcase and rare photographs throughout. |
