Performing with his brothers as The Montgomery Brothers, he became known for his ear-trained solos and unique technique. He collaborated with jazz greats like Cannonball Adderley and Wynton Kelly but chose to lead his own group rather than join John Coltrane. His most acclaimed recordings were made between 1960 - 1966.
