Description | Wes Montgomery, born in Indianapolis, was a self-taught jazz guitarist who began playing six-string guitar at age 20, inspired by Charlie Christian. Performing with his brothers as The Montgomery Brothers, he became known for his ear-trained solos and unique technique. He collaborated with jazz greats like Cannonball Adderley and Wynton Kelly but chose to lead his own group rather than join John Coltrane. His most acclaimed recordings were made between 1960 - 1966. Though later criticized for his shift toward pop jazz, this period brought him success and a wider audience. Guitarists like Pat Metheny and Joe Pass hail him as a major innovator. 4 CD Box. |
