Description | Randy Newman''s second album 12 Songs was released in 1970 to enormous acclaim, as it gracefully eclipsed a somewhat patchy debut, and set the tone for Newman''s career thereafter. Whilst many of his singer-songwriter contemporaries adhered to the conventions of this emerging genre with confessional lovelorn tales, Newman''s compositions were marked by the satirical and political nature of his first-person character sketches, which established the narrative direction of much of his future output. On the 21st August 1971 Randy Newman was found performing a solo set in New York, with Radio Station WPLJ on hand to brilliantly capture and broadcast this special performance live across the airwaves. Featured in full on this CD, the broadcast was made up of tracks from 12 Songs, plus six cuts from his first record and three numbers yet to be released on his ''72 album Sail Away. Newman even premiered ''Guilty'', the classic alcoholic''s plea from 1974''s ''Good Old Boys'', as well as a trio of what can now be classed ''rarities''. At over 70 minutes in length, and with Newman in fine voice displaying much of his characteristic wit throughout, this delightful CD will remain the ultimate Randy Newman live document, far surpassing other collections that have been available previously. |
